NEAR MISSES: Greenbrier East was ranked #5 in 1970 and #6 in 1976 when only the top four teams in each class were selected for postseason play. The Spartans were ranked #9 in 1985, when eight were selected, missing by 1/10 of a point. In 2000, East blew a 19-0 halftime lead in the final game of the season to Oak Hill, and lost 21-19. Had the Spartans won, Greenbrier East would have been the 16-seed and played at Morgantown in the first round of the playoffs. Instead, Fairmont Senior visited Morgantown on November 3, 2000. Then-presidential candidate George W. Bush performed the ceremonial coin toss for that contest.
SINCE THE WVSSAC opened the playoff field to 16 teams in 1991, the Spartans have earned a postseason berth 5 times because of the expanded field. Had the 16-team format been incorporated since GEHS was formed in 1968, the Spartans would have likely made the playoffs nine more times ('69, '70, '71, '72, '74, '75, '76, '81, '85).
WITH THE EXCEPTION of '88 Charleston, the Spartans have never lost to an eventual State Champion in postseason play.
