Donnie Turner '69:
Donnie Turner was an Honorable Mention
All-State selection for the Spartans in baseball
in 1969, when he finished with a .410 batting
average. He went on to graduate from Marshall
University, before returning to the Greenbrier
Valley to begin a career in the construction
business. Donnie has been a great friend to
Greenbrier East High School, making financial
and in-kind donations without seeking publicity
for his generosity. He coached Little League
baseball and Youth basketball for over 20 years,
and has membership in the Masonic Lodge,
Lewisburg Elks Country Club, along with serving
as a member of the Carnegie Hall Board of
Directors. From the Class of 1969, Donnie

Ernie Vecchio '69: Ernie Vecchio moved
to Greenbrier County in 1960 as a resident of
Davis-Stuart. He quickly became acclimated to to
his new surroundings through athletics. At
Greenbrier East, Ernie became a two-sport star
in football and track. He was the first-ever
starting tailback for the Spartans and held many
school records in track in the 100, 200, and
440. During his senior year, Ernie had a tough
decision to make: full football scholarship
offer at Marshall University or a partial track
scholarship at West Virginia University. He
decided on track at WVU, which probably saved
him from being on the Marshall plane crash of
November 14, 1970. Ernie went on to make a
career out of helping others. He is a Licensed
Professional Counselor and Psychologist. He is a
published author and serves as an adjunct
professor for the Marshall University Graduate

Rick Boone '72: Rick Boone is the
definition of student-athlete. A three-year
football and baseball letterman for the
Spartans, he was also GEHS Student Council
President in 1971-1972 and Vice President in
1970-71. He went on to West Virginia Tech, where
he was a four-year football letterman from
1972-1975. In 1975, Rick was selected as a First
Team All-West Virginia Conference pick, playing
offensive line and place kicker. A team captain,
he was chosen as the A.W. Orndorff Award winner,
in 1975-1976, as the most outstanding senior
athlete at WV Tech. Today, Rick is Senior Vice
President and Chief Financial Officer of CAM
Holding, LLC in Pikeville, Kentucky. From the

Wayne Weese '74: Wayne Weese was a
three-year football and baseball letterman for
Greenbrier East, and a member of the Spartans'
1972 Class AAA State Championship basketball
team. In football, he led the team in tackles in
his junior and senior seasons. He received a
full athletic scholarship to play football at
West Virginia University, and played one season
for the Mountaineers. Today, he is a resident of
Jacksonville, Florida. From the Class of 1974,
Wayne Weese.
Seneca Wilmer '97: Seneca Wilmer
was the 1997 Coalfield Conference Impact Athlete
of the Year. As a senior, he rushed for a
school-record 1,640 yards, including a school
record 283 rushing yards against Shady Spring. A
week later, he threw the winning touchdown pass
and ran in the go-ahead two-point conversion in
the closing second to beat Beckley, 8-7. He was
a First Team All-Coalfield Conference and Second
Team All-State football pick in 1996. Seneca was
a three-year football letterman, a two-year
baseball letterman, and a two-year basketball
letterman, and scored the winning three-point
basket to beat Oak Hill in 1997. From the Class
